Sled dogs have held a long noble history in our Canadian culture. Vital to the survival of remote communities these snow dogs were used by the Native Americans in their every day lives to help survive very cold climates. They were used to guard the tribe's reindeer herds, haul food and other supplies, and to pull heavy loads.
Today sled dog races are held across the world to celebrate the culture and history of these sled dogs. One thing that has been missing in our Winnipeg Winter for the last couple of years is a sled dog race. Well that is about the change. The Festival Voyageur Sled Dog race has a long history in Manitoba and was one of the exciting parts of the annual celebration of the Voyageur.
On Saturday January 30th and Sunday January 31st 2010, the Voyageur Sled Dog Classic will take place along the Red River. Racers and their dog teams from all over Canada and United States will converge onto Winnipeg to test their skills and endurance once again. The schedule of events are as follows:
