In 2001, Calgary-based artist Bev Tosh, the daughter of a War Bride, celebrated her mother’s 80th birthday by completing a large portrait of her as a young bride. This painting of her mother was the inspiration and beginning of a passionate pursuit to honor all war brides through her artwork. Tosh focused on telling the moving story of Canada’s war brides, a history at the heart of tens of thousands of Canadian families. The project evolved into a major touring exhibition called "War Brides: One-Way Passage", which is the result of hundreds of interviews with war brides in North America, Britain, Europe and Australia and New Zealand.
This exhibition has been shown throughout Canada in every province except Manitoba. The exhibition features portraits of war brides on wooden panels. These paintings capture the spirit of these young women as they began their journey into a less than certain future. The exhibition also includes several symbolic installations and various personal memorabilia from the 40’s.
The Portage and District Arts Centre is pleased to have the opportunity to show this exhibition in the gallery from August 24 to October 30. The Arts Centre is hosting a War Bride Tea to celebrate all War Brides and their families on Sunday September 12th from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm in the gallery. Everyone is welcome! Images from Tosh’s exhibit and historical wartime stories have been beautifully captured in a book, which is now available at the Arts Centre Gift Shop for $20.00. Dr. Robin Carter, Rona and the Mantioba Arts Council locally sponsor the War Bride Exhibit.

2010-09-08T10:56:266th Annual Canada's Longest Yard SaleEvent Link
Attention all yard sale enthusiasts!
The 6th Annual Canada’s Longest Yard Sale, held right here in eastern Manitoba, will soon be here. This annual event, hosted by the Eastern Manitoba Tourism Association (EMTA), runs from Friday, September 10th to Sunday, September 12th, 2010. Involving communities over a 250 kilometer route, the ‘sale’ runs as throughout Eastern Manitoba.
Visit the many towns and villages in between. While you’re at it, stop in at the many farmer’s markets, restaurants, antique shops and museums along the way. Check out EMTA’s website: www.easternmanitobatourism.ca for a map detailing the entire route and additional information. If you would like to host a yard sale and be part of this exciting experience, just call the EMTA office at 1-866-268-2884. Registration is free. All participants are asked to place yellow balloons near their driveway to signify that they are part of the event. Choose a section of the route, or make it a full day and try to take in as many sales as you can.
Enjoy the “country hospitality” the Eastman region is known for and be prepared to see a lot of merchandise, new and old - unique pieces of furniture and handy household items. Eastern Manitoba is a vast area, full of natural beauty, great attractions and many fun events. We encourage you to take this opportunity to drive throughout the region, enjoy nature at its best, discover a unique museum or market, and visit one of the many delightful restaurants along the way.
Brother Rob McIntyre has organized an all Phi Golf tournament. This will take place at Larters in St Andrews just outside the city. There will be more detailed information coming soon. This is extra to the weekend package.
Our official celebration of the weekend as Brothers will begin that evening at the "SWORD AND SHIELD DINNER"
This is a dinner for the Brothers to celebrate their friendships. As such it will be a shirt and tie event for all. Prior to the reception all the Brothers are asked to meet at 6 pm SHARP nn the steps of the Fort Garry for another historic photo which will be submitted to THE SCROLL. After the photo all the Brothers will assemble in the Provencher Room for a reception at 630 pm.
At the very beginning of the evening the formalities will be concluded. There will be a very brief program which will include a ceremonial reading of our Bond of friendship. Dinner will follow with a four course meal of Prime rib of Beef. The emphasis is an evening of friendship. In that spirit we have requested a grand piano for Brother Scott Swail and many will be introduced to old Phi songs from the past
"Phi Wives Event" - Plans are underway for a fun filled event for the wives that evening. More to be announced later
Saturday September 11
The entire day is free for visiting. In the evening there will be a new event -- "THE ALL GREEK SOCIAL" hosted by Phi Delta Theta, Alpha Delta Pi and Alpha Gamma Delta.
We are inviting any members of Greek letter societies to attend. An invitation will go out in both the U of M alumni Journal and the U of W. The dress is casual and the fun begins at 8 pm in the new Grand Ballroom of the Fort Garry Hotel. It is rumored that Fabulous George will be making an appearance. There will be some food service later in the evening. This will be a chance to renew acquaintances with many other people.
Sunday September 12
"PHI DELT FAREWELL BRUNCH" - Grand Ballroom of the Fort Garry at 1:00 pm. A four star Fort Garry Brunch will be served including a waffle station and an omelet station. This event is meant for all Phi Delts and their wives or companions. Dress is relaxed and casual as many people are travelling that day

2010-09-08T10:56:26War Brides ExhibitionEvent Link

In 2001, Calgary-based artist Bev Tosh, the daughter of a War Bride, celebrated her mother’s 80th birthday by completing a large portrait of her as a young bride.
